Construction has now begun on the Grimmen PV park, to be installed by IBC Solar on a 19-hectare clay pit in the Nordvorpommern district of Germany. The opening ceremony marking the beginning of work was attended by Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel.

The turnkey solar power plant will feature a rated power of approximately 7MWp. The land, leased to IBC by Grimmener Ton & Umwelt, has now been deemed a commercial conversion site, as it is not suited for agriculture or residential construction. However, during the 25 year lifetime of the plant, the land should become fertile again, preparing it for future use.

IBC Solar will install 30,480 polycrystalline solar modules in the upcoming weeks. These panels, which are expected to produce a total of 6,239,256 of electricity per year, will be placed on mounting systems which will be driven into the ground, not anchored to a cement foundation.

Udo Möhrstedt, founder and CEO of IBC Solar said, “In this region it’s still early days for photovoltaics, at least compared to what’s happening in southern Germany. The region is brilliantly suited to both wind energy and the generation of solar power. The city of Grimmen is setting a great example with their decision to go ahead with the solar park. We hope to encourage other cities and towns to take advantage of the opportunities presented by photovoltaic technologies. IBC Solar is always on the lookout for suitable sites for the production of environmentally-friendly energy.”

The installation is due for completion within the upcoming weeks for grid connection by the end of 2010.
