China-based Zhejiang Fortune Photovoltaic Co (M-Cells) has placed an order with Singulus Technologies for delivery of up to 16 vacuum coating machines with conversion efficiencies of over 18% for multicrystalline solar cells. Delivery of the first machine is scheduled for the first quarter of 2014.

The deal is said to include an option for the purchase of Singulus’ ‘SINGULAR XP’ tools, used for rear side passivation of crystalline PERC solar cells that could be valued in the ‘double-digit million range,’ according to the company.

Dr.-Ing. Stefan Rinck, CEO of Singulus Technologies said, “The increase in efficiency of solar cells is extremely important. We are convinced that we will be able to combine the latest and cutting-edge technology from Germany with M•Cells’ know-how for a mutual success.”

The Vice General Manager of M•Cells, Mr. Ximing Zhou added, “M-Cells has already reached important milestones in the area of multi-cell efficiency and I firmly believe that together with SINGULUS we will make rapid progress for M-Cells to continue its leading position in the international solar cell market.”

M-Cells is following guidance given by the Chinese Government that PV manufacturers should improve conversion efficiencies to higher levels using more advanced technologies to remain in the sector. Although timelines have yet to be revealed, several firms have now made purchase orders for technology upgrades to meet a minimum of 18% efficiency for multicrystalline solar cells.
