Trina Solar strengthens Jordan presence with 2MW EPC deal

China’s Trina Solar has been awarded a contract to build what is set to be Jordan’s largest PV installation.

The 2MW PV plant will be built on the rooftops of stores and warehouses belonging to Fresh Fruits Company, a food storage and logistics business based in Amman, Jordan’s capital.

Trina will undertake the engineering, construction and procurement of the installation, as well supplying its Solar TSM-PC05A Honey 260Wp modules for the project.

Construction is expected to begin next month and be complete in the second half of the year. The finished plant is expected to generate 3,200MWh of electricity every year, according to Trina Solar.

Jordan is reliant on increasingly expensive oil and natural gas imports to generate power.

“Solar energy provides Jordan with a viable alternative and we see huge potential for growth in this market,” said Jifan Gao, chairman and chief executive of Trina Solar.

“Following this EPC contract and a previous supply contract for 1MW of Trina Honey photovoltaic modules also in Jordan, we will continue to actively pursue new opportunities in this emerging market.”

Omar Hashlmon, general manager of Fresh Fruits Company, said: “Our business of operating cold stores is an energy intensive operation. This project will significantly contribute to a reduction in our annual electricity expenditure.

“It will also be a sound investment for our company due to the expected quick recovery of the initial investment thanks to favourable renewable energy policies enacted by the local government.”

In 2012, Jordan introduced a feed-in tariff of US$0.163 for PV projects not exceeding 500MW.
