UDP Renewables, part of the UFuture Investment Group, has commissioned the second phase of the Scythia Solar project, taking the total capacity to 46MW.

Scythia Solar 2 is located in the Zaporizhia region in Ukraine’s south and has a peak capacity of 33.1MW. The project features JA Solar modules.

“UFuture and UDP Renewables continue to consistently realize the economic potential of Ukraine's southern region following our long-term energy strategy,” said Vasyl Khmelnytsky, founder of UFuture. “Now, the share of renewable energy sources in our country's energy mix is only about 3%, but together we work towards changing that. Our target is more than 160MW of total capacity by the end of 2019,” added Khmelnytsky.

According to UDP, the latest phase created 315 jobs and attracted €21.58 million (US$24 million) of investment.

UDP is also working with Acciona on a pair of projects in Odesa with a total capacity of 43.7MW.

Ukraine has been powering through solar milestones with a series of projects in the south as well as closer to the capital Kiev in the north. It completed a 2GW solar tender in 2018.

In April 2019 a 200MW plant, the third-largest in Europe at the time, was completed by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) and Ukrainian energy firm Donbas Fuel and Energy Company (DTEK).
