‘World’s largest’ single axis PV plant complete

Renewables EPC company, Abengoa has completed what is said to be the world’s largest PV plant using a single-axis tracker.

Named ‘Mount Signal Solar’, the 206MW plant is located in Calexico in California, and will generate enough energy to power 72,000 houses in San Diego, Abengoa said. More than 3 million panels fixed to an axis to track the path of the sun have been installed across 801 hectares

Although Abengoa claims Mount Signal is the largest single axis solar power plant, the 250-megawatt California Valley Solar Ranch has been operating since October 2013 and also uses the single-axis SunPower Oasis Power Plant technology.

Abengoa completed engineering, construction and procurement for the solar power plant which was constructed and commissioned in just 16 months, creating 700 local jobs.

The plant is to be operated by solar power plant owner Silver Ridge Power.

California is the leading state for installed solar capacity, breaking solar output records in March this year.
