Timminco resumes silicon metal production

23 June 2009 | By Emma Hughes | News > Materials

Timminco

Timminco Ltd., has announced that it will be resuming production of silicon metal at its Becancour Silicon facilities effective as of Monday.

This turn-around comes shortly after the company announced it would be curtailing its production earlier this year due to difficult market conditions and reduced demand for silicon metal in the chemical and aluminum industries.

PV-tech reported back in May that 172 of the unionized employees had been given temporary layoff notices to bring employment levels in line with current production levels; these employment levels will now begin to rise.

Now the market conditions have improved and so demand for silicon metal from the chemical industry has increased.

Timminco decided yesterday that it will restart one of its three electric arc furnaces and restart production.
