Activ Solar completes first phases of 80MW Ukrainian solar plant

Activ Solar has completed the first two phases of its record-breaking 80MW PV project in Ukraine. When all four stages are completed, the power station, located on 160 acres of land in Ohotnikovo, will be the fourth largest development in the world.

Each installation phase will add 20MW to the system; the first has been connected to the grid and the second is expected to achieve the same in the coming weeks, while the remaining two are due to come online before the end of 2011.

The finished park will be comprised of 360,000 modules, generating around 100,000 MWh of energy every year, and will only be surpassed in capacity by the plants in Sarnia, Canada (97MW), Montalto di Castro, Italy (84.2MW) and Finsterwalde, Germany (80.2MW).

Ukraine is one of the solar industry’s most promising growth markets and, due to its high irradiance level, the Crimean region is particularly exciting. “A project of this magnitude marks a turning point in the development of solar power in Europe and should confirm Ukraine’s position as an upcoming renewable energy provider,” Activ CEO Kaveh Ertefai said. “Drawing on the experience of our latest projects, we are now able to install around 1MW each day, which is remarkable, especially in an emerging solar market like Ukraine.”
