Solar power is coming back to Adrano, home of the one of the first CSP systems. Enel Green Power is starting construction on a new 9MW photovoltaic power plant on the Sicilian site where the historic Eurelios CSP array once operated.

The new plant will be able to generate more than 14 million kilowatt hours annually.

Eurelios was built on the site in 1981 and is claimed to be the first solar power plant in the world to supply the grid with electricity generated by the sun. At that time, the Adrano area was selected because it was deemed the sunniest in Europe, and the concentrating solar tower plant, with a mirror array of more than 7,800 square metres, was able to generate 1MW.

The main components of the Eurelios system, which will be decommissioned in the initial stages of construction, will be sent to MUSIL, the Museum of Industry and Work in Brescia.

The financial details of the project, construction timeline for the new PV plant, nor the types of modules and other balance of systems to be deployed have been disclosed.
