Armor enters OPV manufacturing market with €14 million investment

Armor Group, a French supplier of coated films for the thermal transfer printing industry, is stepping into the OPV solar cell manufacturing realm by investing €14 million (US$18 million) in a pilot OPV production line in La Chevrolière in western France, Les Echos revealed.

The French newspaper reported that the company’s largest shareholder Orfite has already invested €16 million in the research phase. Production for the OPV line is forecasted to begin in 2014 whilst commercial production is expected to start by 2016.

Earlier this year, the thermal transfer printing specialist dipped its toes in the OPV market by launching its OSCAR project in June. Project OSCAR, which is short for Organic Solar Cells by Armor, involves a consortium of five companies with Armor taking the role as initiator and project leader. The project focuses on developing OPV cells for the solar industry.
