After a slow start, this year’s PV Industry Forum, the traditional opening conference of Intersolar Week in Munich, finally got going during the last session of the day with a resounding call to action from none other than Q-Cells’ boss, Anton Milner. The conference opened with the usual slides and the usual suspects giving their views of the overall solar market. The obligatory emerging market was given lip service--this time it was India--while the rest of the presentations mostly failed to engage the audience in a meaningful way. 2,500 Solar Industry Participants Eligible to Vote for Next Solar Manufacturing Leader. Photovoltaics International, a leading source for technical manufacturing information and news concerning the solar industry, along with the organisers of the International Solar Technology Awards, the Cell Awards, invite the solar industry to vote online for its favourite manufacturing technology.  To vote members of the industry must register online before May 13th and then simply rate entries on a scale of 1-20.  The winners of the Cell Award will be announced at Intersolar Munich on May 28th.

Meyer Burger Ltd. has announced a tool win from Wacker Schott Solar GmbH. The order will include wire and cropping saws with the first shipments being deliverd some time in Q1 2009. The full contract, which extends over at least three years, will be delivered in stages on the basis of a call off clause.

On the 26th of November three pieces of legislation received Royal assent and were passed into law. Key for the Solar industry is the Energy Bill which has now been amended to include feed in tariffs for renewable power generation. Other laws passed include the Climate Change bill, which sets up the UK for an aggressive 80% reduction in green house gas emmisions by 2050. The Planning Bill will simplify planning permission for energy infrastructure projects.Photovoltaics International reported in depth on this bill during October. Read our report here.

Dyesol, the Australian owned company that makes Dye Solar Cells (DSC), has officially opened its new manufacturing facilities in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia. This facility will enable Dyesol to fast track its commercialisation strategy.

Congress has passed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 with the support of senators Obama and McCain. The news is welcomed by the solar industry but unusually was met by traders with a plunge in the value of solar stocks.
