In a joint venture, NYSE Euronext and research company Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) have developed three new sector indices covering solar and wind energy as well as energy smart technologies (EST). Each index is produced using the different global stock market values of 70–200 industry companies, and a minimum threshold exposure to applicable renewable energy sectors is also calculated.

The solar index incorporates data from polysilicon producers and chip manufacturers to PV project developers and installers. It is hoped the new indices will be used by clean energy professionals to inform and track investments, as the interest in carbon mitigation strategies continues to grow rapidly.

“These indices draw on the deep research our analysts have done over many years into value chains of these complex sectors. Many stock market investors may be somewhat familiar with the solar and wind industries, but they may not appreciate the wide range of companies involved, from material and component makers, to sub-assembly and final equipment manufacturers, from advisors to project developers. Trends become clearer when you look at all these activities.” commented Michael Liebreich, chief executive of Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Liebreich concluded, “As for EST, this covers a complex set of technologies that will be absolutely key to the world's chances of reducing emissions in the next 40 years, and we believe investors will benefit by understanding the different pieces – including smart grid, building and industrial efficiency, electric vehicles and power storage.”

The three new indices are designed to supplement the regional energy indices released in November of last year – NYSE-BNEF Asia Oceania Clean Energy Index, NYSE-BNEF Europe, Middle East and Africa Clean Energy Index and NYSE-BNEF Americas Clean Energy Index.
