Port of Oakland commissioners voted late last week to approve a US$8.9 million deal to purchase solar power over the next 20 years.

Under the agreement, the Port will buy around 11GWh of electricity annually from Antelope Valley solar farm located in Lancaster, California. This will cover 35% of the renewable energy target California needs to meet its 2030 renewable portfolio standard (RPS).

The Port said its municipal utility will resell the electricity to tenants – including those at Oakland International Airport and the seaport – at a rate of US$39/MWh.
