An investment and development agreement for the first tranche of projects was signed with officials from Huaping County at the inaugural China-South Asia Expo, held in conjunction with the 21st China Import and Export Fair in Kunming (see picture).

Clenergy said it would invest RMB1 billion (US$163 million) into the projects, which cover a total area of 530 square kilometers. The 20MW initial phase of the project is in Huaping’s Zhongxin Town, with production expected to begin by the end of August 2014.

Clenergy said Huaping’s dry, hot climate made it well suited to solar energy generation.

The Huaping government is said to be aiming to tap solar power to relieve Huaping’s electrical supply and demand imbalance.
