China’s GCL-SI is to ship 150MW of modules to what is being described as Europe’s largest ongoing solar development project.

The Nuñez de Balboa project, currently under construction in Usagre, south west Spain, is being developed by utility giant Iberdrola.

GCL scooped up rights to supply 150MW of modules to the project in March this year, and is now preparing to deliver 72 polycrystalline products with three separate power gradings to the project next month.

Scheduled to complete next year, the Nuñez de Balboa solar farm is Iberdrola’s maiden in Europe and comes amidst a significant push for new-build large-scale solar in southern Europe.

The plant has a maximum grid connection capacity of 391MW and is forecast to produce some 832GWh of power each year. That power will help support Spain’s transition “to a more sustainable energy system,” Iberdrola chairman Ignacio Galán said.

Spain continues to be one of solar’s hottest markets and is increasingly a destination for developers and component manufacturers alike.

Iberdrola is also building what stands to be Europe’s largest solar farm just north of the Nuñez de Balboa project, while the likes of Lightsource BP, Athos and BayWa r.e. are lining up projects in the country to name just a few. That wealth of activity is driving manufacturers to the country as well, with Huawei recently backing its latest product certification to help boost its focus on the market.

The prospects and challenges of solar's new era in Europe and beyond will take centre stage at Solar Media's Solar Finance & Investment Europe (London, 5-6 February) and Large Scale Solar Europe 2020 (Lisbon, on 31 March-1 April 2020).
