Renewable developer Sempra US Gas & Power has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the California cities of Los Angeles and Burbank.

The cities will collectively purchase 250MW of solar power from Sempra’s proposed Copper Mountain Solar 3 project. The project is slated to be built in Boulder City, Nevada; nearly 40 miles outside of Las Vegas with power delivered from the plant to the Southern California cities through a substation and transmission lines operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).

The LADWP will benefit the most from the solar plant, receiving around 210MW of the power produced by the plant, through an agreement with the Southern California Public Power Authority. Burbank has agreed to purchase the remaining 40MW.

Construction on the Copper Mountain Solar 3 project is anticipated to begin in January and reach completion in 2015. Jeffrey Martin, president and CEO of Sempra US Gas& Power noted that the project is a step in the right direction towards reaching the company’s 1,400MW goal of renewable capacity by 2016.
