Siemens Gamesa is to construct what it claims to be India's first large-scale commercial hybrid solar and wind project, by connecting 28.8MW of solar to an existing 50MW wind plant in Karnataka.

Under an agreement with an unnamed independent Indian operator, Siemens Gamesa will provide an end-to-end turnkey solution, including EPC services. It will provide PV inverters from Gamesa Electric to the hybrid project that already uses Siemens Gamesa turbines.

The project is scheduled to be up and running by the end of 2017.

“This is a very important milestone for our company. We are truly proud to be rolling out this new hybrid solution – namely the optimal combination of solar and wind power technology – on a commercial scale,” said Ramesh Kymal, CEO of Siemens Gamesa's onshore business in India. “With a market potential of around 15GW in India, our customers are increasingly interested in this type of integrated renewable system.”

Before joining with Siemens, Gamesa had been carrying out solar EPC services in India for since 2015.
