SunEdison and PermaCity to develop 22MW of rooftop solar in Los Angeles

Renewable energy company SunEdison has reached an agreement with solar developer PermaCity to develop, construct and own 22MW of rooftop solar as part of the Beacon Bundled Solar contract that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) gave to SunEdison in July 2014.

As part of the Beacon Bundled Solar contract, both SunEdison and PermaCity will lease public and privately owned property within the LADWP service area in order to hit their 22MW mark. SunEdison will offer procurement and engineering services for the sites while also providing SunEdison solar panels. Meanwhile, PermaCity will oversee the construction of the installations.

SunEdison is expected to give clean energy power plant owner TerraForm Power an option to claim these projects once they are completed.

Rafael Dobrzynski, SVP – general manager commercial and industrial distributed generation at SunEdison, said: “The City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power have presented the local community with a fantastic opportunity to earn extra income by utilizing their roof space. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power program supports the use of local developers and we are proud to be working with PermaCity on this project.”

Aside from the 22MW in rooftop solar, the Beacon Bundled Solar contract will also see SunEdison develop 88MW of utility-scale PV power at the Beacon location in Kern County, California, which is set to become operational in 2016. This combined 110MW of installations will help Los Angeles reach its goal of receiving 25% of its energy needs from clean resources by 2016 and 33% by 2020.
