SunWize Systems has completed the first stage of its 4.45MW car park solar array. The system, situated on top of a Veteran’s Affairs (VA) medical center in Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the largest of its kind in the U.S. and is expected to be completed in July 2012.

Originally, the array’s capacity was only intended to be 3.63MW, but the new design will now see 18,000 Samsung and Sanyo solar panels incorporated into its structure, helping to generate in excess of 7 million kWh of electricity per annum.

“SunWize has been a great partner to VA, taking phase one from concept to the operational carport system now providing clean solar energy to the hospital,” James Larson, energy manager at the medical center said. “We are proud to be a renewable energy leader in the health care community and look forward to working with SunWize on the completion of phase two.”

The project is one of a number of PV systems SunWize has been contracted to build by VA, as part of the government department’s attempt to explore renewable energy ventures.
