CPUC approves Soitec, SDG&E PPAs for 155MW San Diego PV portfolio

All five of Soitec's PV plants will be built in San Diego County.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved five power purchase agreements (PPA) between Soitec Solar Development and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E). Although individual project sizes have not been disclosed, the combined capacity of the portfolio is 155MW.

The PPAs were signed earlier this year; in April Soitec agreed to sell the electricity generated from three plants with a combined capacity of 30MW to SDG&E, before striking a deal for two much larger systems, totalling 125MW, one month later.

All five projects are located in San Diego County and each will be equipped with Soitec's Concentrix concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) technology. These CPV modules are to be manufactured at a new 200MW facility in the San Diego area. When completed in 12 months time, the site will create up to 450 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs. The exact site of the new facility is yet to be revealed.

SDG&E has also successfully negotiated with CPUC to include an option to purchase additional capacity from Soitec in the future.
