Over the past decade, Suntech and its partners has played a prominent role in promoting PV, installing more than 5GW of solar panels worldwide. Its panels have also helped provided an estimated 1 million people around the world, primarily in off-grid regions, with access to electricity and by 2020 the company aims to increase this number to 20 million.

“The award reaffirms our commitment to the environment, and serves as an inspiration to other companies around the world to join us in our effort to build a sustainable future,” Suntech's founder and CEO, Dr. Zhengrong Shi, said.

The winner of the Gigaton Prize is chosen by the Carbon War Room, the Gigaton Throwdown and the World Climate Summit.

“Suntech has done more than any other company in the renewables space and are therefore helping to reduce the impact of carbon emissions on the environment,” said Carbon War Room CEO Jigar Shah. “This award recognizes Suntech's pioneering spirit and commitment to a new energy future.”
