Emerald Solar Energy — a joint company established by Canada’s Potentia Renewables and the Dominican Republic’s Cisneros — has commenced work on a 25MW PV project in Barahona, located in the Dominican Republic.

The renewable-energy project, which will feature an initial investment of about US$40 million, is expected to be completed within a year. Once operational, the installation will generate enough energy on a yearly basis to supply 10,000 households with electricity.

The project is part of the Support Plan for Renewable Energy Projects —  promoted by the Dominican government and the Dominican Corporation of State Electric Companies, CDEEE.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the site was held in the Dominican Republic and was attended by the President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina — along with Rubén Bichara, vice president of the CDEEE; Ernesto Villalta, vice minister of Energy and Mines and Angel Canó, executive director of the National Energy Commission.

Fernando Joffre, director of business development of Potentia Renewables, said: “The signs of economic and social stability, as well as the level of legal security, invited us to arrive and want to grow together with Dominican society in the long term.”
