The French government has confirmed reports that it is to introduce a 500MW annual cap on PV installations. The decision was reached at a meeting with the French Prime Minister, François Fillon, last month and it will come into force on March 10.

Solar power’s future in Ontario looks bright after the province awarded feed-in tariff (FiT) contracts to 35 new large-scale projects. The projects make up 257MW of the 872MW in FiT contracts that were handed out by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to renewable initiatives.

France’s solar energy market could see a 500MW cap from 2011 in addition to the projects that have already received permits by the end of 2010, according to reports in French newspaper, Les Echos. The French Government estimates that 3.4GW of projects have received construction permits in 2010 and roughly 2GW of these projects could ultimately get built in the 18-month timeframe which stretches to the first quarter of 2012.

Australia’s Capital Territory (ACT) feed-in tariff has been expanded to include medium to large-scale solar projects in order to cater for larger commercial and industrial farms as well as community groups. According to the Australian Solar Energy Society, the gross feed-in tariff, which pays a premium for all solar energy generated, is now available for solar panel installations 30kW to 200kW.

Global solar demand fundamentals remain strong, according to Barclays Capital's financial analyst Vishal Shah, at least for the near-term. Stronger than expected PV installations in some of the key markets, such as Germany and Italy, have led the analyst to increase his estimate for 2010 to 18.5GW, up from a previous projection of 15.5GW (installed). Solar demand across the EU is forecasted to have reached approximately 14.5GW last year.

The backlash to the U.K. Government’s decision to launch a comprehensive review of its feed-in tariff on Monday has begun. Dissenting voices are becoming increasingly audible, with ministers publically bemoaning the coalition’s decision and airing fears about its long-term impact on the solar industry.

Although analysis is still ongoing, the Italian energy office responsible for handling PV installation applications, GSE, has provided an update to installation figures for 2010. The total number of submissions that were received on time reached 54,106, providing a total power figure of 3,771MW.
