German Electro-Mechatronic Systems (GES), a Germany-headquartered company with a background in LED lighting, has signed a deal to manufacture solar PV panels and LED lights in Macedonia.

Founded in 2010, the company does not yet list solar products on its website, but announced last week that it will invest around €15 million (US$16.3 million) in a manufacturing facility in the Balkan nation. GES already has a sales office in the Macedonian capital of Skopje, as well as a manufacturing plant in China and an office in Egypt.

GES said it signed an agreement with representatives of Macedonia’s government including the minister of foreign investments which will see construction of the facility begin in February or March at the latest, for completion in “six to eight months”. Macedonia’s prime minister Nikola Gruevski and vice prime minister for economy Vladimir Peshevski also attended the signing of the agreement.

The 1.5 hectare factory will be located in a government-designated technological industrial development zone in the village of Bunardzik. GES claimed it will create 200 job positions. No further details on the solar products to be made at the plant were provided.
