In anticipation of others to follow suit, Taiwan-based Motech Industries will be offering a ‘Solar Cell Certificate of Origin,’ to customers wanting to avoid the newly imposed import tariffs on Chinese solar cells and modules. Motech makes c-Si solar cells in Taiwan, which are excluded from the import duties as well as having a module assembly plant in Newark, Delaware.
“We want to protect our customers by providing them with a certificate of origin,” said Dr. Pen Heng Chang, Chief Executive Officer of Motech.

Motech noted that as a fully vertically integrated manufacturer of solar modules, it had control over the supply chain from silicon ingot to module with all the verification documentation to demonstrate origin of components.
The company also noted that it had not exported any modules using Chinese solar cells to the US since January 2012 and would not be subject to the US Commerce Department ruling.
