Ethiopia kickstarted the second round of its World Bank-led Scaling Solar programme with a 500MWac solar tender, while the first 250MWac round is still approaching the final proposal stage.

The Public-Private Partnerships Directorate General (PPP-DG) within the Ministry of Finance issued a Request for Pre-Qualification (RFQ) for the PV capacity on Wednesday and the deadline for application submissions is 29 May 2019. The next stage will involve a Request for Proposals (RFP) from pre-qualified bidders.

The proposal is for four separate PV projects at Weranso, Welencheti, Humera and Mekelle.

International bidders are encouraged to participate in consortia with local private partners.

Earlier this month, PPP-DG issued an RfP for the first 250MWac Scaling Solar tender, asking the 12 pre-qualified bidders to submit their final proposals before the end of June.

Scaling Solar programmes are also active in Senegal, Zambia and Madagascar.
