PV developer OCI Solar Power’s 4.4MW solar farm, Alamo 2, has officially begun generating power, officials say.

Located northeast of San Antonio, Texas, Alamo 2 is the second phase of a 400MW PV project that OCI is developing for local utility company CPS Energy under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

Tony Dorazio, OCI Solar Power president and CEO, said: “Alamo 2 will be a great neighbor to San Antonio and Converse residents. … Solar farms are an all-around win because of their passive nature, but positive environmental impacts.”

Cris Eugster, CPS Energy’s chief generation and strategy officer, said: “The Alamo 2 solar farm moves us another step closer to making clean, carbon-free energy an even larger part of our diversified generation portfolio. … This project also builds on our model of co-locating solar farms with waste water facilities.”

OCI constructed the facility in collaboration with the San Antonio River Authority (SARA). SARA owns the 45 acres of land that Alamo 2 was built on.

Further phases of OCI’s 400MW project are in various stages of development. Alamo 1, a 41MW facility, has been running operations on San Antonio’s South Side since December 2013. Alamo 3 is slated to begin construction this year, while Alamo 4, a 39MW project in Bracketville, Texas, is currently being built.

When the 400MW project is completed in 2016, the facility will power 10% of San Antonio homes, according to OCI Solar Power.
