Transform Solar, a JV established in 2010 between Origin Energy and Micron Technology, advised that it will no longer be manufacturing its Sliver PV modules in Idaho. The company decided to take this route after a review of the global oversupply of PV capacity and the resulting difficult market conditions. Operations and workforce in Idaho will be progressively cut over the next three months.

The company noted that while the current market does not support investment in new technology, Transform Solar will maintain Sliver’s intellectual property and expects to continue its development on a laboratory scale. Origin advised that it is currently reviewing the carrying value of its 50% stake in Transform Solar, but no decision will be disclosed until it releases its FY2012 results in August. The parent company did state that it will continue to support customers who have purchased Sliver systems in Australia.
