Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to construct 1GW PV power plant

Plans for a 1GW PV power plant are underway in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, where the Al-Husseini Group, a diversified real estate, industrial and trading organization based in Amman, Jordan, and Amelio Solar plan to construct a 200MW thin-film PV module manufacturing plant over the space of three years, which will power the gigawatt-scale plant.  The Jordan-based gigawatt plant, referred to as a “multi-year” project, will be designed by Amelio Solar and is expected to be completed by 2017.

The short-term plan for the joint venture will see the implementation of a 22MW factory in Jordan to produce thin-film a-silicon, CIGS and related hybrid photovoltaic modules using a manufacturing platform created and installed by Amelio Solar, scheduled for completion by the end of 2009, with the 200MW thin-film photovoltaic module factory to be completed over a three-year period. The module line will supply low-cost Amelio Solar modules to the power plant as well as to the open market.

“We are pleased to be introducing to our country this strategic technology and production platform, and we are grateful for the leadership and support of his Majesty King Abdullah and the cooperation of the Ministry of Energy in this important effort,” said Mr. Omar Al-Husseini, CEO of Al-Husseini Group. “Our joint venture is bringing this capability to Jordan on a scale that will provide a truly cost-competitive, renewable source of electricity for today and the future, as well as a foundation for industrial growth in the new energy economy.”

    Photovoltaics International 16th Edition

This sixteenth edition of Photovoltaics International marks four years of production of the quarterly journal. As always, our focus is on efficiency and quality improvement and cost reduction in manufacturing. As 2012 rolls along, companies are falling by the wayside due to supply and demand issues, ASP declines and drastic governmental subsidy cuts. A clear picture of 2012 is offered through papers from the likes of TÜV Rheinland, Fraunhofer ISE, SEMI PV Group and EPIA, amongst others.

    Photovoltaics International Lite, Volume 05 - 2011

This digital interactive Lite sees Tom Cheyney follow Agua Caliente’s progress on becoming one of first truly utility-scale PV power farms, where 40–50MW (AC) will be commissioned by the end of the year. We also feature one of the world’s largest silicon thin-film PV power plants, Avenal; a report on warnings of the collapse of module prices from Solarbuzz and PI-Berlin presents tips on PV module testing. A print version of this edition will be distributed at Solar Power International 2011 in Dallas, Texas.
