Indian state-owned power equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won an order to build three extra high voltage (EHV) substations in the state of Karnataka to transmit power from a major solar park.
The order for Power Grid Corporation of India (Powergrid) is valued at INR960 million (US$14 million) having been won in an ADB-funded international competitive tender.
This will include substations of 400/220kV at Pavagada and Vasantnarsapur in Tumkur as well as a 400kV substation at Mysore.
The 400/220kV substations will transmit power from what BHEL claims will be India's largest solar park, set for 2GW at the Pavagada district, on 4,046 hectares of land. The substations are expected to be commissioned within 18 months.
Equipment will be supplied by BHEL's manufacturing Units at Bhopal and Bangalore.
BHEL is already carrying out 765kV substation orders for Powergrid in Gujarat and Rajasthan under the Green Energy Corridor scheme.
Mercom Capital Group recently said that India’s long-term renewable energy future requires adding transmission capacity and removing bottlenecks immediately, while some developers have faced project delays as a direct result of behind schedule transmission infrastructure.
