Hanwha SolarOne advised upon the release of its second quarter 2011 financial results that it had seen a decrease in its net revenues and PV module shipments on a quarter-over-quarter basis. Revenues for Q2 2011 were finalized at US$277.1 million, down 18.4% from US$335.2 million in Q1 2011. Although revenues were up 2.2% when compared to Q2 2010 results, Hanwha noted that the lower results quarter-over-quarter for fiscal 2011 were due to lower shipments and ASP.
Solar Frontier’s copper-indium-selenium (CIS) thin-film modules have been certified for salt mist and ammonia resistance by TÜV Rheinland. Exposure to high levels of both salt and ammonia neither affected the modules’ operation nor resulted in early aging.
PV equipment and technology supplier centrotherm photovoltaics is to pass control of its Solar Cell & Module division to a subsidiary company.
AU Optronics (AUO) will be combining its upstream manufacturing with SunWize Technologies’ downstream distribution under a new agreement that will see SunWize circulate AUO’s full line of solar PV products to solar installers in North America.
With the release of its second-quarter 2011 results, China Sunergy revealed that lower quarterly shipments, but a somewhat higher gross margin, countered its most recent guidance for the quarter. Revenues for Q2 2011 reached US$144 million, a 22.4% increase over Q2 2010, but a 13.1% decrease from Q1 2011.
Canadian Solar has joined the ranks of Mage and Yingli Solar by adding two German league soccer teams to its sponsorship list. Canadian Solar is well known for sponsoring professional sports teams in the US such as the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants, but with the addition of Hannover 96 and 1.FC Nuremberg, the company is looking forward to spreading their presence in the German soccer leagues.
An unspecified number of projects totalling 5.5 MW are to use Astronergy’s Polycrystalline PV modules and inverters from Chint Power System in PV plants to be built in Saraburi province, Thailand. BOS components will be supplied from other Chint subsidiaries. The Chint Group companies have teamed with Thailand’s Solar Park Co for the projects.
Moving in the opposite direction to many of its competitors, Yingli Green Energy reported record revenue and shipments in the second quarter of 2011. Yingli posted record revenue of US$680.6 million, up 27.4% compared to the prior quarter. PV module shipment increased by 36.6% from the first quarter, reaching an historical high of approximately 410MW, helped by increased demand in the US and China and gaining 46 new customers, who contributed approximately 90MW of PV module shipments in the quarter.
A 2MW US government-sponsored affordable housing project, owned and operated by the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara (HACSB) has used 7,200 SolarWorld panels on 863 unit roofs. This is the largest project of its type so far in the US, according to SolarWorld.
TÜV Rheinland has recently certified Sunways solar modules SM240U and SM245M as ‘Made in Europe’ so that customers can benefit from extra FiT payments under the recently introduced ‘Conto Energia IV’ FiT system in Italy. Sunways makes cells and finished modules at its plant in Arnstadt, Germany.
