Enel Green Power Peru (EGPP), a subsidiary of Italian power giant Enel, has started construction of Peru’s largest solar plant.

The US$170 million Rubi facility, located in the Moquegua District of Peru’s Mariscal Nieto Province, will have a capacity of 180MW. It will be able to generate roughly 440GWh per year, enough to power roughly 351,000 Peruvian households. Enel Group is financing the plant.

A 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed with the Ministry of Energy and Mines. Enel was awarded the PPA after a 2015 public renewable energy tender launched by energy regulator OSINERGMIN.

The project is expected to start commercial operation in 2018, supplying energy to the National Interconnected Power System (SEIN) through the Montalvo Substation.

Francesco Venturini, Enel’s head of global renewable energies, said: “We are proud to contribute our expertise to the development of clean energies in Peru, in this case through the sustainable use of the abundant solar resources available in the south of the country, where Rubi can also be a driver for local development.”
