Emcore has been awarded a lucrative contract by Mitsubishi Electric to build, test and deliver high-efficiency radiation-hard solar cells for four telecommunications satellites.

In a statement the company said the multi-junction solar cells have a beginning-of-life conversion efficiency of about 30% and the option for a patented, onboard bypass diode.

The panels will be manufactured in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be installed in two telecommunications satellites for Turkish aerospace as well as two geostationary satellites for the Japan Meteorological Agency .

The company has delivered solar cells to Mitsubishi Electric for previous satellite missions.  It looks forward to supporting Mitsubishi “with their future space power requirements,” chief operating officer Christopher Larocca said.
