The European Union has provided a grant of roughly €60 million to the Philippines government for the implementation of a programme that would expand access to clean electricity services and promote new energy efficiency strategies in remote areas.

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the European Union aim to help bring power to around 100,000 households in off-grid communities, especially in the Bangsamoro region, through the Access to Sustainable Energy Programme (ASEP).

For example, under ASEP's PV Mainstreaming program, about 40,500 solar home systems (SHS), each with a 50Wp capacity, will be installed in remote off-grid communities in various provinces in Mindanao. To date, the resdiential solar systems have been deployed in Sitio New Mabuhay, Barangay Little Baguio in the Municipality of Malita, Davao Occidental, with around 100 recipient households already using lighting from solar PV.

“Rest assured, the DOE and our partners-stakeholders will continue to explore more projects that will benefit our brothers and sisters in remote areas through innovative solutions,” said DOE Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi.

Other key stakeholders in ASEP, apart from DOE and the EU, include the National Electrification Administration, Energy Regulatory Commission, National Power Corporation, electric cooperatives and local governments.
