Canadian Solar starts ramping first module assembly plant in Brazil

‘Silicon Module Super League’ (SMSL) member Canadian Solar has officially opened its first PV module assembly plant in Sorocaba, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Operated by electronics subcontractor Flextronics International (Flex) the 350MW to 400MW assembly plant is primarily designed to meet local content rules for low-cost project financing for PV power plants being built by Canadian solar in Brazil.

The module assembly plant is currently one of the first in Brazil to start operating and the largest to date.

 “We are pleased with our partnership with Flex in Brazil. We chose to work with the company because of its extensive experience in developing and managing the local supply chain,” said Dr. Shawn Qu, President and CEO of Canadian Solar Inc. “Canadian Solar has a portfolio of 390 MWp of solar projects in Brazil that are expected to enter commercial operation in 2017 and 2018. The new plant will supply the products for our projects and for the domestic market.”

Canadian Solar previously won auctions to build three PV power plants in in Pirapora and Vazante, in the state of Minas Gerais. The 191.5MWp Pirapora I project was said to be under construction and operational in the third quarter quarter of 2017.
