After issuing a tender earlier this year for 40MW of PV capacity by 2020 and 40MW of biomass by 2021, the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority has released a list of 13 pre-qualified bidders that will now take part in the request for proposal (RFP) process.
The list of bidders includes: African Clean Energy Development, EDF Renouvables, Cigenco, Eswatini Green Energy Consortium, Globeleq Africa Holdings Ltd., GreenYellow, ib vogt, InnoVent SAS, JCM Power, Mulilo Renewable Project Developments, Sola Group-Ubombo Sugar, T/Colle Jabil and Sturdee Energy Southern Africa.

In total, the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority received 26 applications ahead of the deadline of 23 August 2019. These 13 bidders will now be required to pay a non-refundable fee of 50,000 Emalangeni (equivalent to a little over US$3,400) in order to receive the RFP documentation.
Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has made efforts to build up its PV sector over the last two years, as the country issued its first utility-scale solar tender back in June 2018. That tender was issued by Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC) for the development of a 10MW solar installation located in the southern region of Lavumisa. Consolidated Infrastructure Group (Conco) was selected a year later to devleop the project, which will help Eswatini cut down on its electricity dependence with South Africa and Mozambique.
