US solar developer Origis Energy has built the first 1GW of solar PV capacity at its planned massive 2GW Rockhound solar-plus-storage facility in Texas.

The company announced the completion of around 500MW of new capacity at the site today, across three project phases. The Rockhound complex in Ector County, Texas, includes the already operational Swift Air Solar projects, which are under long-term power supply contracts with Houston-based petroleum company Occidental (Oxy).

The broader complex also has deals in place with tech and data firm Meta, nutrition company DSM-Firmenich, and steel wire firm Bekaert.

The Rockhound complex is expected to be fully operational with 2GW of solar and energy storage capacity by 2029.

“This milestone underscores Origis Energy’s ability to consistently execute at scale,” said Vikas Anand, CEO of Origis. “Reaching nearly 1GW of operating capacity in Ector County, Texas demonstrates the strength of our platform, the depth of customer demand, and our ability to deliver complex, multi-phase infrastructure projects with safety, quality, speed and certainty.”

Origis said it is currently marketing the next 1GW of solar and energy storage capacity for “data centre co-location opportunities and long-term corporate offtake structures”.

Texas is Origis Energy’s most active US state market. The company has 21 projects either in development, construction or operations, with a combined 2183MW of nameplate solar PV capacity and 750MW of energy storage capacity.

It is also operational in other major US solar markets, including California, Florida and Indiana, where it recently began operations on a 210MW PV project.

Last month, Origis raised US$900 million to support the development of more than 5GW of projects in the late stages of development.
